Description
Load, unload, sort, and stage freight on docks and piers; move materials between trucks, containers, and storage by hand or with basic material-handling equipment while maintaining a safe, orderly dock and protecting cargo.
- • Sort and stage cargo by destination, route, or priority.
- • Read bills of lading, dock manifests, or work orders to determine loads and staging locations.
- • Attach identifying tags or labels and scan barcodes on pallets, crates, and containers.
- • Move freight to and from trucks, containers, and staging areas using hand trucks, pallet jacks, or forklifts if certified.
- • Build, wrap, and secure pallets; install bracing, padding, or strapping to prevent shifting.
- • Pack containers and re-pack damaged or mixed freight as needed.
- • Assemble or repair crates and skids using hand tools and precut lumber.
- • Record counts, weights, and exceptions in daily logs, work tickets, or a WMS with RF scanners.
- • Attach slings, hooks, or tag lines and guide hoisted loads when cranes or hoists are used.
- • Operate dock levelers, plates, doors, and yard ramps to position vehicles and loads.
- • Set wheel chocks and vehicle restraints and communicate with drivers and yard spotters.
- • Carry needed tools, dunnage, and supplies from storage and return them after use.
- • Maintain clean, hazard-free dock and equipment storage areas to protect inventory.
- • Connect refrigerated containers or test equipment to power sources as directed.
- • Follow safety procedures and use required PPE while working around moving equipment and traffic.
