Description
Directly supervise yard staff and operations to ensure safe, timely loading, unloading, staging, storage, and movement of materials and equipment.
  • • Plan yard schedules and allocate crews to meet inbound and outbound volumes.
  • • Coordinate with dispatch, warehouse, and drivers to resolve yard issues.
  • • Monitor loading, unloading, and staging to ensure procedures and quality standards are met.
  • • Issue and explain yard work orders, dock assignments, and load plans.
  • • Verify materials and shipments against bills of lading and work orders.
  • • Communicate shipment status, exceptions, and damages to designated departments.
  • • Determine safe and efficient loading sequences and weight distribution.
  • • Conduct performance check-ins and prepare appraisals for yard staff.
  • • Operate equipment or assist with complex tasks when needed.
  • • Maintain logs for employee time, equipment usage, yard checks, and inspections.
  • • Lead toolbox talks and safety briefings for yard teams.
  • • Coach employees on safe work practices and career development.
  • • Inspect forklifts, trailers, and yard equipment for wear and compliance.
  • • Resolve personnel issues and escalate when necessary.
  • • Recommend promotions, transfers, or corrective actions.
  • • Identify skill gaps and arrange training and equipment certifications.
  • • Schedule pickups, drop-offs, trailer spotting, and carrier appointments.
  • • Maintain yard layout, slotting, and traffic flow plans.
  • • Estimate labor, equipment, and time needed for yard projects or peak periods.
  • • Assist with budget tracking, yard supplies, and procedure updates.
  • • Inspect yard areas for maintenance needs, housekeeping, and hazards.
  • • Participate in recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding yard staff.
  • • Manage inventory of pallets, dunnage, fuel, and yard supplies and reorder as needed.
  • • Enforce OSHA, DOT, and site safety rules and oversee PPE and traffic controls.
  • • Track and report KPIs such as turn time, trailer dwell, and loading accuracy.
