Description
Supervise and coordinate dock teams that load and unload freight, ensuring safe, accurate, and on-time operations, proper load securement and documentation, and compliance with company policies and transportation regulations.
- • Plan dock schedules, assign crews, and allocate doors and equipment to meet volume swings.
- • Communicate load plans, bills of lading, and work orders to loading teams.
- • Review loading work-in-process and completed trailers for accuracy and condition.
- • Verify freight, counts, and labels against manifests, bills of lading, and WMS records.
- • Determine and approve loading sequences based on route, weight, cube, and stackability.
- • Ensure proper load securement, weight distribution, and legal axle limits.
- • Coordinate pickup and delivery appointments with dispatch, carriers, and yard operations.
- • Update stakeholders on loaded items, exceptions, delays, and damages.
- • Inspect forklifts, pallet jacks, dock plates, and restraints for safety and readiness.
- • Conduct pre-shift huddles and safety briefings; enforce OSHA and company policies.
- • Maintain load sheets, dock times, damage reports, and employee time records.
- • Evaluate employee performance and complete appraisals and coaching.
- • Perform or assist with complex loading tasks, operating powered industrial trucks as certified.
- • Train staff on equipment operation, load securement, hazmat handling, and SOPs.
- • Resolve work issues and personnel complaints, escalating when needed.
- • Recommend promotions, transfers, scheduling changes, or corrective actions.
- • Estimate labor, equipment, and time needed per load or project.
- • Monitor KPIs such as trailer turns, dock utilization, and load accuracy.
- • Manage inventory of pallets, dunnage, stretch wrap, straps, and other dock supplies.
- • Inspect dock areas for housekeeping, damage, and maintenance needs.
- • Support budgeting by tracking overtime, equipment usage, and supply spend.
- • Participate in recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding dock staff.
- • Collaborate with warehouse, inventory, and transportation teams to resolve exceptions.
- • Maintain compliance with DOT/FMCSA, OSHA, and hazmat segregation and documentation.
