Description
Directly supervise and coordinate longshore crews loading, discharging, stowing, and securing cargo at marine terminals, ensuring safe, efficient vessel operations in accordance with stowage plans, manifests, and port schedules.
- • Plan gang assignments and shifts to meet vessel schedules and berth windows.
- • Coordinate with ship officers, terminal ops, crane operators, and trucking/rail to resolve issues.
- • Monitor cargo operations and verify compliance with stowage plans, lashing, and quality standards.
- • Brief crews on work orders, manifests, hazards, and procedures before each job.
- • Verify cargo type, count, and condition against manifests and load lists.
- • Report progress, exceptions, and delays to planners, dispatch, and customers.
- • Determine load/discharge sequences and crane moves for stability and port rotation.
- • Evaluate employee performance and complete appraisals.
- • Assist with complex rigging, signaling, or lashing when needed.
- • Maintain tallies, timekeeping, gang sheets, damage logs, and productivity records.
- • Lead toolbox talks and safety meetings.
- • Coach employees on safe practices, cargo handling, and career growth.
- • Inspect cranes, rigging gear, spreaders, forklifts, and slings for condition and certification.
- • Address personnel issues or grievances and escalate when needed.
- • Recommend promotions, transfers, or discipline in coordination with HR/dispatch.
- • Identify training needs and arrange instruction in rigging, hazardous cargo, and radio use.
- • Coordinate gate moves, yard transfers, and drayage or rail connections to meet cutoffs.
- • Provide operations updates and basic rate or service quotes as authorized.
- • Estimate gang size, equipment, and time per vessel or hatch.
- • Assist with budget tracking, equipment utilization, and procedure development.
- • Inspect berths, holds, and yards for maintenance or repair needs.
- • Participate in hiring/dispatch by reviewing credentials, interviewing, and selecting labor.
- • Monitor inventories of dunnage, lashing gear, rigging, and PPE; requisition supplies.
- • Enforce OSHA, USCG, ISPS, TWIC, IMDG, SOLAS, and company safety requirements.
