Description
Counsel and train individuals who are blind or have low vision to maximize independence, safety, and employability. Assess functional vision and environmental needs; design and deliver individualized rehabilitation programs that may include orientation and mobility, daily living skills, communication (e.g., braille), adaptive technology, and job readiness or placement. Coordinate services and activities across homes, workplaces, hospitals, VA or community programs, and care facilities.
- • Monitor and document clients’ progress in orientation and mobility, daily living skills, and assistive technology goals.
- • Confer with clients to set independence and employment goals and plan blindness-specific rehabilitation services.
- • Prepare and maintain records and case files, including functional vision assessments, service plans, and device recommendations.
- • Arrange low-vision, orientation and mobility, psychological, and vocational evaluations to inform service planning.
- • Analyze interviews, eye care records, and assessment results to determine functional vision, needs, and eligibility.
- • Develop individualized blindness rehabilitation plans aligned with clients’ abilities, environments, and career goals.
- • Maintain close contact during training and job placements to resolve accessibility issues and evaluate accommodations.
- • Build and maintain referral relationships with state VR agencies, VA programs, blindness organizations, and schools.
- • Identify employment and community access barriers (print, navigation, transportation, digital) and develop strategies to overcome them.
- • Provide individualized instruction in orientation and mobility, activities of daily living, braille/communication, and adaptive technology; arrange on-site coaching and procure/train in devices such as white canes, magnifiers, CCTVs, screen readers, and braille displays.
- • Collaborate with ophthalmologists, optometrists, O&M specialists, OT/PT, and mental health providers to implement plans.
- • Conduct home, school, and workplace environmental assessments to set training priorities and safety modifications.
- • Engage in employer outreach, advise on ADA-compliant accommodations, place clients in jobs, and evaluate placement success.
- • Educate and involve families and caregivers in home adaptations, communication strategies, and safety techniques.
- • Partner with community agencies to expand accessible services and programs for people with vision loss.
- • Manage case budgets and authorize expenditures for devices, training, transportation, and related services.
- • Supervise vision rehabilitation staff, interns, or volunteers and provide training on blindness-specific practices.
