Description
Provide administrative and clinical support in a fast-paced urgent care under the direction of physicians or advanced practice providers. Duties include rapid intake and prioritization, obtaining histories and vital signs, preparing patients for exams, point-of-care testing, phlebotomy, EKGs, wound care and splinting, and administering medications as ordered. Also manage EHR documentation and coding, front-desk tasks, supply management, and infection control, and help coordinate referrals or transfers when higher-level care is needed.
  • • Triage and intake walk-in patients, obtain chief complaint, history, vital signs, weight, height, and pain score.
  • • Room patients and prepare them and the exam area for urgent evaluation and procedures.
  • • Document histories, vitals, and test results in the EHR using urgent care templates.
  • • Administer medications per provider orders, including injections, vaccines, and nebulizer treatments.
  • • Perform phlebotomy and collect respiratory, wound, and urine specimens; label, log, and process for testing.
  • • Conduct point-of-care tests such as strep, flu, COVID-19, glucose, pregnancy, and urinalysis.
  • • Obtain 12-lead EKGs and monitor pulse oximetry; perform peak flow or spirometry as directed.
  • • Assist with procedures including wound irrigation, dressing changes, suture and staple removal, splinting, and incision and drainage setup.
  • • Explain diagnoses, treatments, medications, and return precautions to patients and caregivers.
  • • Authorize refills per protocol and transmit prescriptions to pharmacies.
  • • Prepare, clean, and restock exam and procedure rooms for rapid turnover.
  • • Clean, disinfect, and sterilize instruments; handle biohazard waste per policy.
  • • Schedule follow-ups, imaging, and specialist referrals; coordinate transfers to the emergency department when indicated.
  • • Greet, register, and verify patients; collect copays and update insurance information.
  • • Answer phones, route messages, obtain prior authorizations, and complete work or school forms.
  • • Ensure accurate coding, charge capture, and EHR documentation for urgent care visits and procedures.
  • • Monitor inventory and order medical, lab, vaccine, and office supplies; maintain emergency cart checklists.
  • • Set up and maintain point-of-care devices and clinic equipment; troubleshoot minor issues.
  • • Perform occupational health services when offered, such as drug screens, breath alcohol tests, and PPD placement and reading.
  • • Follow safety protocols, use PPE, manage patient flow, and assist in emergencies with vitals monitoring and documentation.
