Description
Perform administrative and dermatology-specific clinical duties under the supervision of a dermatologist. Administrative work includes scheduling, patient intake, maintaining dermatology records and photos, insurance billing/coding, and medication prior authorizations. Clinical duties include rooming patients, taking vitals and dermatologic histories, preparing for skin exams and procedures, assisting with biopsies, excisions, cryotherapy, and phototherapy, collecting and processing specimens, wound care, and administering medications as directed.
  • • Interview patients to obtain dermatologic history and current concerns; measure and record vital signs, weight, and height.
  • • Accompany patients to exam rooms and prepare them for skin exams or procedures.
  • • Document dermatology-focused histories, body maps, lesion descriptions, photos, and test results in the EHR.
  • • Prepare and administer medications as directed by the dermatologist, including topical agents and permitted injections.
  • • Assist with skin procedures such as biopsies, excisions, cryotherapy, and electrosurgery; set up instruments and supplies.
  • • Collect, label, and log dermatologic specimens; prepare and ship to dermatopathology.
  • • Educate patients on procedure aftercare, wound care, sun protection, and use of topical and systemic medications.
  • • Assist the dermatologist during exams and treatments; hand instruments, prepare local anesthesia, remove sutures or staples as directed.
  • • Process prescription refills, provide pharmacy information, and coordinate prior authorizations for dermatology medications.
  • • Prepare and maintain exam and procedure rooms, ensuring cleanliness and sterile setup.
  • • Clean, sterilize, and package dermatologic instruments; manage sharps and biohazard disposal.
  • • Schedule patient visits and in-office procedures, including biopsies, excisions, phototherapy, and patch testing.
  • • Change dressings and perform wound checks per protocol.
  • • Greet, check in, and triage patients; verify insurance and obtain procedure and photography consents.
  • • Coordinate with laboratories, dermatopathology services, or surgical centers for testing and patient scheduling.
  • • Perform administrative tasks such as answering phones, handling referrals, and completing insurance and iPLEDGE forms.
  • • Monitor inventory and order dermatology supplies, medications, and office materials.
  • • Prepare slides and perform basic in-office dermatologic tests such as KOH preps and scabies scrapings, per policy.
  • • Set up, operate, and maintain dermatology equipment, including dermatoscopes, cryotherapy units, electrosurgery devices, and phototherapy booths.
  • • Assist with billing, coding, and basic bookkeeping related to dermatology services; collect copays and manage patient statements.
