Description
Plan, direct, and coordinate data engineering and platform initiatives, leading teams that build, operate, and improve data pipelines, storage, and serving systems for analytics, machine learning, and products.
- • Confer with product, analytics, and business stakeholders to define data requirements, SLAs, and delivery timelines.
- • Plan and direct the design, deployment, testing, operation, and maintenance of data pipelines, warehouses, and platforms.
- • Present and explain architecture proposals, roadmaps, and performance reports to executives and stakeholders.
- • Consult and negotiate with stakeholders to define project scope, interfaces, and data contracts.
- • Develop and implement programs to improve data reliability, scalability, cost efficiency, and governance.
- • Evaluate data privacy, security, and compliance requirements (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA) to inform strategy and operations.
- • Assess the quality, lineage, and operational impacts of data engineering initiatives.
- • Identify risks and opportunities in adopting new data technologies, architectures, or tooling.
- • Manage the coordination and integration of ingestion, transformation, storage, and serving layers across projects.
- • Direct, review, and approve schema, pipeline, or platform design changes.
- • Prepare and manage budgets, cloud spend, vendor evaluations, and tool procurement.
- • Assess feasibility by analyzing data availability, technical complexity, capacity, and resource needs.
- • Lead recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, and performance evaluation of data engineering staff.
- • Review, recommend, or approve contracts, statements of work, and cost estimates with vendors or partners.
- • Develop and enforce standards for coding, testing, data modeling, documentation, and CI/CD practices.
- • Perform administrative functions such as reporting, approving expenditures, prioritizing backlogs, and managing licenses.
- • Establish technical goals, OKRs, and a data platform roadmap aligned with business strategy.
- • Secure project sponsorship by aligning with leadership and communicating value and risks.
- • Plan, direct, or coordinate data discovery, profiling, and cataloging alongside project delivery.
