Description
Plan, instruct, and coordinate provider-approved adaptive horseback riding programs for individuals with disabilities in therapeutic riding centers and related settings. Activities include mounted and unmounted horsemanship, balance and posture exercises, and arena or trail sessions. Assess rider abilities, set goals, ensure equine and rider safety, and recommend appropriate equine-assisted activities.
  • • Observe and document rider participation, responses, and progress; modify lesson plans, horses, or tack as needed.
  • • Develop individualized riding goals and lesson plans based on assessments, rider interests, and therapeutic objectives.
  • • Conduct adaptive riding and unmounted horsemanship sessions to promote physical, cognitive, and psychosocial well-being.
  • • Instruct riders in mounting and dismounting, balance, steering, posture, and rein management using adaptive equipment and cues.
  • • Screen riders for eligibility and contraindications; obtain medical releases and precaution details from providers and caregivers.
  • • Select and prepare appropriate horses; fit and check tack and adaptive equipment to ensure comfort and safety.
  • • Lead and supervise volunteers, horse leaders, and side-walkers; provide training and direction during sessions.
  • • Implement risk management and barn or arena safety procedures; maintain emergency readiness and incident response.
  • • Collaborate with therapists, healthcare providers, and families to plan, coordinate, and evaluate rider goals and progress.
  • • Maintain accurate records, including progress notes, attendance, goals, and incident reports; report outcomes to stakeholders.
  • • Develop transition or discharge plans and refer riders to community programs or additional therapies as appropriate.
