Description
Investigate rent and housing complaints and inspect residential properties to ensure compliance with rent control, housing codes, and government program regulations.
  • • Prepare correspondence, inspection and investigation reports, and enforcement recommendations.
  • • Review leases, rent ledgers, permits, and ownership records to detect discrepancies or illegal rent practices.
  • • Conduct inspections of rental units and buildings for habitability, safety, and occupancy compliance.
  • • Interview tenants, landlords, and witnesses; collect, document, and preserve evidence.
  • • Investigate alleged violations such as illegal rent increases, unlawful evictions, harassment, and illegal short-term rentals.
  • • Verify compliance for rent-controlled, stabilized, affordable, and voucher-assisted units.
  • • Issue notices of violation or orders to comply; recommend administrative or legal action.
  • • Coordinate with housing agencies, code enforcement, legal counsel, and law enforcement on cases of mutual concern.
  • • Testify at administrative hearings, rent boards, or courts regarding findings.
  • • Monitor corrective action plans and settlement terms; conduct follow-up inspections.
  • • Investigate applications for rental permits, landlord registrations, or occupancy certificates.
  • • Inspect subsidized or government-funded housing projects for contract and regulatory compliance.
  • • Provide outreach and compliance guidance to landlords and tenants to prevent violations.
