Description
Teach undergraduate and graduate civil engineering courses on the application of physical laws and engineering principles to the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure and the built environment. Includes professors focused on structural, geotechnical, transportation, water resources, environmental, and construction engineering who are primarily engaged in teaching or in a combination of teaching and research.
  • • Prepare and deliver lectures on structural analysis, mechanics of materials, hydraulics and hydrology, geotechnical, transportation, and construction engineering.
  • • Stay current with civil engineering research, codes, and standards through literature, professional societies, and conferences.
  • • Supervise undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants, internships, capstone design, and research projects.
  • • Evaluate and grade coursework, laboratory activities, design reports, and papers.
  • • Conduct and publish research in areas such as infrastructure systems, materials, water resources, transportation, or geomechanics.
  • • Develop syllabi, assignments, lab manuals, and design project briefs.
  • • Create, administer, and grade quizzes and examinations or oversee this work.
  • • Write grant proposals to agencies such as NSF, DOTs, EPA, and industry sponsors.
  • • Supervise laboratory and field activities in materials, soils, surveying, and hydraulics.
  • • Lead and moderate design studios, code interpretation sessions, and technical discussions.
  • • Hold regular office hours to advise and assist students.
  • • Plan, assess, and revise curricula to meet ABET outcomes and emerging civil practice needs.
  • • Advise students on course planning, internships, FE/EIT and PE licensure, and career paths.
  • • Maintain attendance, grades, safety training, and other required academic records.
  • • Collaborate with colleagues across engineering and allied fields on teaching and research initiatives.
  • • Select and procure textbooks, software such as CAD/BIM, GIS, and structural analysis tools, and laboratory equipment.
  • • Participate in student recruitment, registration, orientation, and placement activities.
  • • Serve on departmental, college, ABET accreditation, and safety committees.
  • • Perform administrative duties such as coordinating programs or serving as department chair.
  • • Provide professional consulting or extension services to municipalities, DOTs, and engineering firms.
  • • Curate reading lists including civil codes, standards, and technical references.
  • • Advise and mentor ASCE, Concrete Canoe, and Steel Bridge student organizations.
  • • Engage in campus, community, and K-12 outreach related to infrastructure and sustainability.
  • • Review manuscripts and proposals for professional journals and conferences.
