Description
Coach individuals and teams in basketball fundamentals and competition. Demonstrate techniques, offensive and defensive systems, and practice methods. Evaluate athletes’ strengths and weaknesses for player development and recruiting to prepare the team for competitive play. Positions requiring teaching certification should be classified accordingly.
- • Plan, organize, and conduct basketball practices, drills, and film sessions.
- • Design game strategies and select lineups and rotations for each opponent and the season.
- • Develop and direct strength, conditioning, and agility programs for peak basketball performance.
- • Adjust coaching methods to individual players’ skills, roles, and learning styles.
- • Prepare and file scouting reports with player evaluations, recruiting recommendations, and target events and contacts.
- • Teach basketball rules, offensive and defensive concepts, and proper footwork, ball-handling, shooting, and defensive techniques.
- • Analyze opponents’ tendencies and sets to craft game plans and situational plays.
- • Evaluate players’ skills with metrics and video to determine position fit and development needs.
- • Stay current on basketball rules, analytics, technologies, and coaching philosophies.
- • Monitor safe use of courts, baskets, balls, training aids, and strength equipment.
- • Build and manage game, tournament, and practice schedules.
- • Explain and enforce safety, sportsmanship, and eligibility rules.
- • Organize and lead scrimmages, skill sessions, and off-season workouts.
- • Demonstrate proper use of training tools, such as shooting machines, heart-rate monitors, and weight equipment.
- • Plan and run camps, clinics, skills academies, and tryouts.
- • Select, purchase, inventory, and issue basketball equipment, uniforms, and supplies.
- • Provide training direction, motivation, and basic nutrition and recovery guidance for games and travel.
- • Teach related courses or study halls and advise student-athletes as required by the program.
- • Communicate with parents or guardians regarding player progress and team matters.
- • Coordinate travel, lodging, and logistics for away games and tournaments.
- • Hire, supervise, and develop assistant coaches, trainers, and managers.
- • Maintain and analyze practice, game, and scouting video and performance data.
- • Counsel student-athletes on academic, athletic, and personal matters and refer to resources as needed.
- • Represent the program in community outreach, media appearances, alumni events, and fundraising.
- • Monitor and report on student-athlete academic eligibility and progress.
- • Identify and recruit prospects through evaluations, contacts, campus visits, and scholarship offers where applicable.
- • Plan and oversee the program budget, purchasing, and fundraising activities.
