Description
Provide short-term evaluation and treatment of speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing disorders across travel assignments in hospitals, SNFs, clinics, and schools. Rapidly adapt to new sites, select and teach alternative communication systems, and coordinate handoffs to ensure continuity of care. May use telepractice and contribute to quality improvement or research on communication disorders.
- • Perform rapid evaluations of speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing across settings.
- • Track progress and modify treatments during short-term placements.
- • Administer standardized and bedside assessments with site-approved tools.
- • Develop evidence-based treatment plans aligned with facility protocols and payer rules.
- • Teach AAC, sign, lip reading, and voice strategies for effective communication.
- • Train oral-motor and respiratory control for speech and swallowing.
- • Create home programs to support carryover after assignment handoff.
- • Integrate test results, MBS/FEES reports, and histories to guide care.
- • Document evaluations, treatments, and discharges in multiple EMRs on time.
- • Coordinate intake, scheduling, and caseload handoffs with onsite teams and agency.
- • Join IEP, care plan, or interdisciplinary team meetings on site or virtually.
- • Consult with educators, nurses, physicians, and rehab staff on management strategies.
- • Select, trial, and program AAC; train patients, caregivers, and staff.
- • Adapt materials and diagnostics when resources vary by site.
- • Deliver group, classroom, or unit-based interventions as assigned.
- • Educate patients and families on techniques, safety, and dysphagia precautions.
- • Use telepractice and digital tools when appropriate.
- • Maintain state licensure, credentialing, and onboarding compliance for each assignment.
- • Meet productivity, documentation, billing, and Medicare/Medicaid or district standards.
- • Supervise SLPAs, CFs, or aides per state and facility policy.
- • Refer to medical, audiology, or educational services and arrange follow-up before departure.
- • Provide in-services to orient staff to communication supports and swallowing care.
- • Complete timecards, travel reports, and manage portable therapy equipment.
- • Participate in continuing education and quality improvement or research when available.
