Description
Assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing disorders across the lifespan. Select and train augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems. Collaborate with medical and educational teams, document outcomes, and may conduct related research.
  • • Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans.
  • • Administer standardized speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing assessments.
  • • Interpret test results, case history, and instrumental swallow studies (e.g., VFSS/FEES) to diagnose disorders.
  • • Develop and implement evidence-based treatment for stuttering, language delay, dysphagia, and voice disorders.
  • • Teach strategies for clearer speech, improved voice, and fluent communication.
  • • Train clients in sign language, lip reading, or other compensatory strategies when indicated.
  • • Strengthen oral, facial, and respiratory muscles to support speech and swallowing.
  • • Design home practice and exercise programs to promote carryover.
  • • Select, program, and teach use of AAC devices and alternative communication strategies.
  • • Use software and clinical instrumentation to assess and treat communication disorders.
  • • Conduct individual and group therapy sessions, lessons, or therapeutic games.
  • • Consult with educators, physicians, and caregivers on communication and swallowing management.
  • • Participate in IEP or care team meetings and report progress.
  • • Document evaluations, plans of care, progress notes, and discharge summaries; complete billing.
  • • Educate patients and families on communication techniques and coping strategies.
  • • Develop classroom or group programs to address speech, language, behavior, or feeding needs.
  • • Complete administrative tasks, including scheduling and case management.
  • • Supervise and collaborate with speech-language pathology assistants or students per regulations.
  • • Refer clients to medical, audiology, psychological, or educational services as needed.
  • • Participate in conferences, trainings, and continuing education to maintain competencies.
  • • Conduct or contribute to research and share findings to improve practice.
  • • Design or adapt diagnostic tools, therapy materials, or AAC solutions.
  • • Provide communication support for dialect speakers or English learners when appropriate.
