Description
Assess and treat bilingual and multilingual individuals with speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing disorders across languages. Differentiate language difference from disorder, select and teach multilingual AAC systems, collaborate with interpreters and families, and conduct research on culturally and linguistically responsive practices.
  • • Monitor bilingual clients’ progress in each language and adjust treatments accordingly.
  • • Administer culturally and linguistically appropriate hearing and speech-language evaluations in both languages, using standardized, dynamic, and informal measures.
  • • Develop and implement bilingual treatment plans for stuttering, delayed language, swallowing, voice, or fluency disorders, integrating input from physicians, psychologists, or social workers.
  • • Instruct clients in effective communication techniques in both languages, such as sign language, lip reading, voice improvement, or pragmatic strategies.
  • • Teach clients to control or strengthen articulators and breathing mechanisms with cues in the preferred language.
  • • Develop bilingual speech and language exercise programs to reduce functional limitations.
  • • Consult with educators and medical staff on culturally responsive communication strategies and bilingual speech-language stimulation.
  • • Design, select, or program AAC devices and communication strategies that support multiple languages.
  • • Conduct bilingual lessons or therapeutic activities to support teachers addressing speech and language needs.
  • • Communicate with clients using AAC, sign language, or technology in the target languages.
  • • Provide communication instruction tailored to dialect speakers and emergent bilinguals, distinguishing difference from disorder.
  • • Use assessment and therapy software, telepractice, and language apps to identify and treat communication disorders across languages.
  • • Conduct or support research on bilingual speech, language, and hearing, and share findings to improve practices and treatments.
  • • Integrate test results, swallowing studies, case history, and language background to diagnose and plan bilingual treatment.
  • • Write compliant documentation and billing records, noting language(s) of service, interpreter use, goals, progress, and discharge.
  • • Develop individual or group programs in schools or clinics that address speech, language, behavior, or swallowing needs for bilingual learners.
  • • Participate in IEP and care team meetings, provide bilingual progress reports, and contribute language-specific goals.
  • • Complete administrative tasks, including scheduling across languages, coordinating interpreters, and preparing bilingual lesson plans.
  • • Educate clients and families in their preferred language about communication techniques and strategies to prevent misunderstandings.
  • • Engage in continuing education on bilingual assessment and intervention and share knowledge at trainings or conferences.
  • • Supervise or collaborate with therapy teams, training staff in culturally and linguistically responsive practices.
  • • Consult with and refer clients to additional medical, educational, or community services, ensuring language access.
  • • Supervise students or assistants and coach interpreters or bilingual aides in appropriate roles.
