Description
Perform a range of USPS retail and mail-handling duties: receive and process letters and parcels; sell postage, stamps, postal cards, and stamped envelopes; issue and cash money orders; sort and dispatch mail; verify postage and packaging; and assist customers with forms and regulations. May work for USPS or authorized contractors.
- • Balance cash drawer and reconcile daily transactions.
- • Weigh letters and parcels, calculate postage by class, weight, and destination, and affix postage.
- • Obtain recipient signatures for registered, certified, or special delivery items.
- • Register, certify, and insure letters and parcels.
- • Sell and collect payment for stamps, postage, envelopes, and money orders.
- • Inspect mail for correct postage and proper packaging.
- • Answer questions on mailing regulations, postage rates, and post office boxes.
- • Complete forms for address changes, theft or loss, and special services.
- • Guide customers in complying with USPS and other federal regulations.
- • Sort incoming and outgoing mail by hand or using electronic sorting and scanning devices.
- • Cash money orders.
- • Rent and manage post office boxes.
- • Store undelivered parcels, retrieve them for customers, and document releases.
- • Assist customers with claims for lost, stolen, or damaged mail.
- • Record and refer complaints about mail theft, delivery issues, and damaged items.
- • Receive letters and parcels and place mail into bags or designated bins.
- • Cancel postage using machines or hand stamps.
- • Transport mail between workstations.
- • Order and maintain retail stock and office supplies.
