Description
Provide clerical and communication support on a hospital unit, using knowledge of medical terminology and inpatient workflows. Coordinate admissions, discharges, and transfers; manage patient charts and orders; schedule tests and transport; and serve as the unit’s central contact for staff, patients, and families.
- • Answer unit phones and call lights, routing inquiries to appropriate staff.
- • Greet visitors, verify purpose of visit, and enforce unit and visitor policies.
- • Process admissions, discharges, and transfers in the hospital information system; maintain census and bed board.
- • Support unit quality and safety protocols by maintaining required logs, such as isolation, telemetry, or valuables.
- • Assemble, file, and maintain patient charts and EHR documentation.
- • Receive, time-stamp, and route provider orders; enter non-medication orders per policy and notify the care team.
- • Schedule diagnostic tests, procedures, and patient transport based on provider orders.
- • Track and relay lab, imaging, and consult results to the clinical team.
- • Prepare, scan, and transmit correspondence, consents, and medical records in compliance with HIPAA.
- • Maintain unit communication tools, such as whiteboards, rounding lists, and on-call directories.
- • Coordinate communications with nursing, physicians, ancillary departments, and support services.
- • Monitor and order unit supplies and forms; submit service requests for equipment as needed.
- • Operate office and communication systems, including EHR, paging, fax, printers, and bed management tools.
- • Collect and verify patient demographics and insurance information during intake as assigned.
- • Process discharge paperwork and arrange follow-up appointments as directed.
