Description
Provide and manage lactation education and clinical support programs that help parents and infants establish and sustain breastfeeding. Use data to identify needs before planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating lactation services, policies, and environments. Link hospitals, clinics, WIC, insurers, and families to address individual and population infant feeding needs. Serve as a resource to parents, health professionals, and the community, and may administer fiscal resources and grants for lactation programs.
- • Collaborate with obstetric, neonatal, and pediatric teams to identify lactation needs and set care goals.
- • Maintain client records, follow-up systems, referral networks, and resource lists.
- • Supervise and mentor lactation staff, peer counselors, and students.
- • Design and conduct quality reviews and outcome evaluations of lactation services.
- • Lead outreach and education through newsletters, social media, and program websites.
- • Prepare and manage grant applications and reporting for lactation initiatives and equipment.
- • Advise employers, schools, and agencies on breastfeeding needs and program delivery.
- • Develop and maintain a library of lactation education materials and loaner equipment.
- • Conduct community surveys and needs assessments on infant feeding practices and barriers.
- • Create culturally responsive educational materials for families and healthcare partners.
- • Distribute and explain materials on latch, milk supply, medications, pumping, and weaning.
- • Provide orientation and continuing education on lactation for nurses and other staff.
- • Document lactation assessments, care plans, feeding outcomes, and referrals.
- • Provide individual counseling and group classes on breastfeeding and pumping.
- • Build and maintain partnerships with hospitals, WIC, pediatric and obstetric practices, and community groups.
- • Develop and implement protocols and policies that support breastfeeding goals and Baby-Friendly standards.
