Directly supervise and coordinate solid waste and recycling collection crews, vehicles, and routes to ensure safe, timely, and compliant service.
- • Enforce DOT, OSHA, and company safety rules, PPE use, and safe backing procedures.
- • Plan daily routes, crew assignments, and truck allocations to meet service commitments.
- • Communicate with customers, municipalities, and operations staff to exchange information and resolve service issues.
- • Resolve crew concerns and coach employees on performance and conduct.
- • Review route sheets, service orders, and work tickets to set work sequences and priorities.
- • Implement measures to improve crew engagement, route efficiency, equipment utilization, and customer service.
- • Maintain records of hours, route completion, tonnage, fuel, incidents, and crew activities.
- • Interpret municipal contracts, service policies, traffic rules, and disposal site requirements for crews.
- • Train new hires and assign on-the-job training and ride-alongs to experienced drivers.
- • Prepare and submit reports on operations, productivity, safety observations, and accidents.
- • Recommend or implement personnel actions such as hiring, evaluations, recognition, or discipline.
- • Requisition carts, dumpsters, lids, parts, PPE, and repair services as needed.
- • Inspect trucks, lifts, containers, and collection areas for safety, cleanliness, and compliance.
- • Estimate staffing, overtime, disposal capacity, and equipment needs for upcoming work.
- • Dispatch drivers and support vehicles to handle missed pickups, breakdowns, spills, and weather events.
- • Schedule and track preventive maintenance and repairs for collection vehicles and equipment.
- • Verify load weights, contamination, and special handling needs at routes and disposal facilities.
- • Operate a refuse truck or assist on routes when necessary to meet service timelines.
- • Conduct route ride-alongs and spot checks to ensure proper procedures and material handling.
- • Assist crews with bulky item pickups, cart swaps, and site cleanups when needed.
- • Direct crews in trash, recycling, yard waste, and bulk collection; cart delivery and removal; and transfer station activities.
- • Develop weekly and holiday collection schedules and communicate changes to stakeholders.
