Description
Draft and construct precision master patterns for footwear uppers, linings, and reinforcements based on lasts and design specs. May also mark and cut leather or synthetic materials and assemble sample uppers for fitting.
  • • Test shoe patterns by making and lasting sample uppers on the specified last.
  • • Draw stitch lines, joins, eyelets, perforations, overlays, and component positions on pattern parts using CAD or drafting tools.
  • • Plan pattern nesting to minimize material waste and align grain/stretch; mark hides or sheets accordingly.
  • • Create and grade master patterns for each size on the chosen last using charts, CAD, or grading devices.
  • • Draft upper, lining, and reinforcement parts by adapting existing patterns or creating new ones.
  • • Produce paper or digital patterns and cutting templates for mass production.
  • • Cut master and sample patterns with knives or scissors, or plot/print from CAD.
  • • Collaborate with footwear designers and developers to convert sketches and prototypes into flat patterns and component pieces.
  • • Mark patterns with size, last, style, piece names, grain, notches, and assembly instructions.
  • • Calculate pattern dimensions and allowances based on last measurements, size grading, material stretch, folding, skiving, and lasting needs.
  • • Review sketches, lasts, samples, and specs to define quantities, shapes, and sizes of parts and estimate material usage.
  • • Trace patterns onto card or plastic and cut durable templates for clicking and skiving.
  • • Trace patterns onto leather or synthetics and cut sample uppers by hand.
  • • Enter specifications into footwear CAD to assist with design, grading, nesting, and cutting.
  • • Adjust patterns after fittings, lastings, and wear tests to improve fit and manufacturability.
  • • Create technical specifications detailing closing operations, skive lines, stitch types, perforations, allowances, and lasting/assembly steps.
