Description
Diagnose, repair, maintain, and install AC/DC generators and generator-set electrical systems, including windings, regulators, wiring, and controls.
- • Measure voltage, amperage, frequency, rpm, and insulation resistance to diagnose generators, using meters, tachometers, and load banks.
- • Record repairs performed, parts used, test results, and labor time.
- • Disassemble generators, alternators, and gen-sets for inspection and repair, using hand and power tools.
- • Inspect stators, rotors, windings, slip rings or commutators, bearings, and housings for wear or damage.
- • Rewind stator or rotor coils, or replace windings, using coil-winding machines and insulating materials.
- • Varnish, bake, and cure rewound coils to restore insulation integrity.
- • Reface or machine slip rings and commutators to specified tolerances.
- • Replace or repair brushes, brush holders, diodes, and rotating rectifier assemblies.
- • Replace bearings, seals, and fans, and lubricate moving parts.
- • Test and adjust automatic voltage regulators (AVRs), excitation systems, and droop/UFRO settings.
- • Rewire and repair generator leads, control wiring, relays, and breakers per schematics.
- • Solder, braze, or crimp electrical connections and terminations.
- • Clean and dry windings and components; remove carbon, oil, and corrosion with solvents and abrasives.
- • Set up and operate load banks to verify output, stability, and temperature rise.
- • Verify phase rotation, output balance, and equipment grounding.
- • Align generator to engine or drive; check coupling, runout, and clearances.
- • Test for overheating, vibration, and abnormal noise using thermometers and vibration meters.
- • Diagnose and repair starting and charging systems for gen-sets, including starters and alternators.
- • Test, recharge, or replace gen-set starting batteries and service chargers.
- • Read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, and work orders to plan repairs.
- • Assemble and reassemble generators to specifications, verifying clearances and torque.
- • Set and verify protective relays, sensors, and alarms as required.
- • Configure control panels and meters; calibrate voltage, frequency, and power-factor readings.
- • Verify and adjust alignments and dimensions using gauges, dial indicators, and micrometers.
- • Perform insulation, hipot, and surge tests per standards.
- • Use cranes, chain hoists, and rigging to move heavy generators or subassemblies; signal operators when needed.
- • Maintain stocks of parts, tools, and consumables.
- • Document test data, quality checks, and customer reports.
- • Follow safety procedures, including lockout/tagout and arc-flash PPE.
- • Perform onsite installation, commissioning, and field service for generators and auxiliary systems.
