Description
Diagnose, repair, rewind, maintain, and install electric motors and motor controls; test performance, replace or fabricate components, and ensure work meets specifications and safety standards.
- • Measure rpm, amperage, voltage, insulation resistance, and circuitry to diagnose motor faults using meters and other testers.
- • Read work orders, schematics, and service manuals to determine required repairs and specifications.
- • Inspect and test motors to locate damage or wear in windings, bearings, shafts, and commutators.
- • Disassemble motors for repair using hand and power tools.
- • Rewind stator and rotor coils or fabricate replacement coils with coil-winding machines.
- • Cut, form, and insert insulation and wedges into armature, rotor, or stator slots.
- • Repair or replace defective parts such as coil leads, carbon brushes, brush holders, bearings, seals, and wires.
- • Solder, braze, or weld electrical connections; wrap and coat wires to ensure proper insulation.
- • Reface, undercut, ream, and polish commutators and machine parts to specified tolerances.
- • Reassemble electric motors to required ratings and clearances using hand tools and electrical meters.
- • Test repaired motors for performance, balance, and overheating with tachometers, speed gauges, and thermometers.
- • Verify and adjust alignments, clearances, and dimensions with gauges and dial indicators.
- • Rewire motor circuits and repair or replace starters, contactors, and switches.
- • Inspect electrical connections, wiring, relays, and terminal boxes following wiring diagrams.
- • Lubricate bearings and other moving parts according to maintenance procedures.
- • Clean housings and components using solvents, steam, and buffing equipment.
- • Set up and operate test benches and computer interfaces to configure motor parameters and controls, including soft starters or VFDs.
- • Balance rotors and align shafts and couplings.
- • Maintain parts inventory and request or order replacements.
- • Record diagnostics, repairs, parts used, test results, and labor time.
- • Lift and position motors with cranes or hoists, or signal operators to handle heavy units.
- • Follow electrical codes, lockout/tagout, and safety procedures during all work.
- • Set up machinery and fixtures for proper assembly and performance testing.
- • Verify rotation, phase sequence, and balance under no-load and load conditions.
- • Install, mount, and align motors and bases at customer sites per specifications.
