Description
Repair, maintain, and install power and distribution transformers and related components, including windings, bushings, tap changers, cooling systems, and control wiring.
  • • Measure turns ratio, polarity, and phase displacement with TTR meters to diagnose winding and connection faults.
  • • Measure insulation resistance and polarization index with megohmmeters to assess dielectric condition.
  • • Measure winding resistance and excitation current to identify shorted turns, loose connections, or tap issues.
  • • Perform power factor and capacitance tests on windings and bushings using Doble or equivalent equipment.
  • • Record required repairs, parts used, test results, and labor time.
  • • Disassemble transformers, bushings, radiators, and tap changers for inspection and repair using hand and power tools.
  • • Reassemble and seal transformers to specified ratings and torque values using appropriate tools and test equipment.
  • • Maintain stocks of gaskets, bushings, oils, tap changer parts, and hardware.
  • • Repair or replace defective windings, leads, bushings, gaskets, fans, pumps, gauges, and wiring.
  • • Rewire control cabinets and replace sensors, relays, meters, and indicators.
  • • Inspect electrical connections, leads, LTC mechanisms, cooling systems, and control wiring using diagrams and manuals.
  • • Read service guides, nameplates, work orders, and schematics to determine repair steps and test parameters.
  • • Solder, braze, or weld lead connections and terminal lugs to ensure reliable joints.
  • • Assemble components such as bushings, radiators, conservators, gauges, and tap changers per drawings.
  • • Lubricate LTC mechanisms, motor drives, and fan and pump bearings.
  • • Remove and replace worn parts such as gaskets, lead wires, LTC contacts, and tap resistors using soldering and brazing tools.
  • • Lift cores, tanks, and assemblies with cranes or chain hoists, or signal crane operators.
  • • Weld or braze tank leaks and attachment points, then pressure test repairs.
  • • Rewind or replace coils and reinsulate windings using coil-winding machines and drying ovens.
  • • Cut, form, and install insulating paper, pressboard, and barriers for windings and core assemblies.
  • • Configure and run automated test sets and monitors via computer to verify performance.
  • • Verify clearances, clamping pressure, and dimensions of cores and windings using gauges and torque tools.
  • • Check for overheating and hotspots with infrared scanners and thermometers during tests.
  • • Clean and flush tanks, radiators, and components to remove sludge, moisture, and contaminants.
  • • Degas, filter, and vacuum-fill insulating oil; sample and test oil for moisture, dielectric strength, acidity, and dissolved gases.
  • • Perform vacuum and pressure leak tests on tanks, bushings, and fittings.
  • • Service and adjust on-load tap changers, including inspection of contacts, selectors, diverter switches, and drive mechanisms.
  • • Install and test auxiliary devices such as pressure relief valves, Buchholz relays, breathers, gauges, fans, and pumps.
  • • Ground, isolate, and lock out equipment; test for absence of voltage before starting work.
  • • Prepare detailed test reports, as-found/as-left data, and customer documentation.
  • • Prime, paint, and coat tanks and radiators to prevent corrosion.
  • • Straighten and repair dented or twisted tank panels and enclosures.
