Description
Inspect natural gas and propane systems—including piping, meters, regulators, appliances, and vents—in buildings and utility distribution settings to verify safety, integrity, and compliance with fuel gas codes, utility standards, and regulations.
  • • Inspect gas piping, service lines, meters, regulators, valves, and appliances during and after installation for safety and code compliance.
  • • Conduct leak detection with combustible gas indicators, electronic sniffers, and soap solution; document findings.
  • • Witness and verify pressure tests on new or modified gas piping with manometers or calibrated gauges.
  • • Review and interpret plans, isometrics, and specifications for gas systems to confirm sizing, materials, pressures, and venting meet codes.
  • • Inspect trenches, bedding, backfill, and pipe joining for underground gas installations and service tie-ins.
  • • Verify appliance venting, flue draft, vent connector slope, and termination clearances; check combustion air provisions.
  • • Check regulator venting, overpressure protection, relief valves, and excess flow valves for proper installation and operation.
  • • Confirm bonding and grounding of metallic gas piping and CSST per electrical and fuel gas codes.
  • • Measure pressures, leak rates, and flow where required; record readings.
  • • Monitor contractor work practices to ensure hot work, excavation, and line locating safety requirements are met.
  • • Maintain daily inspection logs, checklists, and photo documentation.
  • • Issue permits, approvals, tags, or red-tags for gas installations, meter sets, shutdowns, or restorations of service.
  • • Approve compliant plans and installations; issue notices of violation or stop-work orders when required.

  • • Evaluate corrosion control measures and cathodic protection readings on applicable steel piping.
  • • Perform bar-hole testing and conduct leak surveys of mains, services, and building perimeters.
  • • Ensure materials, fittings, and joining methods (e.g., welding, fusion, flaring, threading) meet standards and manufacturer instructions.
