Description
Research and study insects and related arthropods, including their evolution, classification, development, anatomy, behavior, ecology, and roles as pests, vectors, and beneficial organisms, to inform pest management, conservation, agriculture, and public health.
  • • Develop and maintain partnerships with growers, vector-control districts, beekeepers, agencies, and the public to coordinate entomological monitoring and management.
  • • Program and use statistical and GIS software to store, analyze, and visualize entomological data.
  • • Collect and analyze data on insects, hosts, natural enemies, and environmental factors driving population dynamics.
  • • Study aquatic and terrestrial insects and how water quality, pollution, or habitat change affect them.
  • • Communicate surveillance and study results, including vector-borne disease risks, to regulatory agencies, industry stakeholders, and the public.
  • • Identify and classify insects using morphological and molecular methods; study structure, behavior, physiology, nutrition, and distribution; maintain reference collections.
  • • Represent the organization at scientific meetings, extension events, and professional conferences.
  • • Plan and manage entomology research and surveillance programs for government, universities, or industry.
  • • Assess how land use and agricultural practices affect insect pests, pollinators, and biodiversity, and develop improvement strategies.
  • • Measure microclimate, plant chemistry, and water parameters to relate abiotic conditions to insect performance and survival.
  • • Teach entomology courses or workshops and supervise student research.
  • • Supervise technicians and field crews conducting insect surveys, rearing, and lab assays.
  • • Investigate insect evolution, development, life cycles, and functional roles in ecosystems.
  • • Monitor and manage wild insect populations, including pollinators, beneficials, and invasive species.
  • • Prepare requests for proposals and statements of work for entomology projects.
  • • Develop integrated pest management and pollinator habitat plans for sustainable resource management.
  • • Design and validate trapping, sampling, and rearing methods for representative insect and arthropod specimens.
  • • Develop and evaluate pest exclusion, suppression, and resistance-management strategies using scientific methods.
  • • Prepare technical reports, risk assessments, and environmental impact documents and communicate findings to stakeholders.
  • • Review pest management plans, pesticide registrations, and habitat proposals for scientific accuracy and regulatory compliance.
  • • Write grant proposals to secure funding for entomological research and outreach.
