Description
Research the origin, classification, anatomy, physiology, development, ecology, and conservation of plants and algae and their interactions with the environment.
  • • Develop and maintain partnerships with agencies, land managers, and the public to support plant conservation and management.
  • • Use statistical software and databases to store, process, and analyze botanical data.
  • • Collect and analyze data on plant populations, communities, and their environmental relationships.
  • • Study aquatic and terrestrial plants and environmental stressors affecting them, such as pollution, salinity, or nutrients.
  • • Communicate study results and recommendations to regulators, stakeholders, and the public.
  • • Identify and classify plant species; curate voucher specimens; study morphology, anatomy, physiology, reproduction, and distribution.
  • • Represent the organization in a technical capacity at scientific meetings and conferences.
  • • Plan and administer botanical research or monitoring programs for government, industry, or nonprofits.
  • • Assess effects of land and water use on vegetation and recommend restoration or management actions.
  • • Measure soil properties, light, temperature, moisture, and water quality to relate conditions to plant performance.
  • • Teach or mentor students and conduct research in academic settings.
  • • Supervise technicians, interns, and collaborating scientists.
  • • Investigate plant evolution, phylogeny, development, anatomy, and function.
  • • Study and manage native, rare, and invasive plant populations.
  • • Prepare requests for proposals and statements of work for botanical projects.
  • • Develop vegetation and habitat management plans and restoration prescriptions.
  • • Develop and refine methods and equipment for plant, seed, tissue, and soil sampling.
  • • Develop integrated pest and weed management measures; assess risks from plant pests and pathogens.
  • • Prepare technical reports and environmental impact documentation; present findings to industry, government, and the public.
  • • Review land-use and resource proposals for scientific accuracy and regulatory compliance related to vegetation.
  • • Write grant proposals to secure funding for botanical research and conservation.
