Description
Research, assess, and protect threatened and endangered species and their habitats by leading monitoring, recovery planning, regulatory reviews, and stakeholder coordination to reduce threats and improve population viability.
  • • Build and maintain partnerships with agencies, tribes, NGOs, landowners, and the public to implement recovery actions.
  • • Use GIS, databases, and statistical software to store, analyze, and model species and habitat data.
  • • Design and conduct field surveys to detect, monitor, and map listed species and critical habitats.
  • • Collect and analyze demographic, genetic, and habitat data to assess status and trends.
  • • Evaluate project and land-use impacts on listed species; develop avoidance, minimization, and mitigation measures.
  • • Lead ESA Section 7 consultations and prepare biological assessments and supporting analyses.
  • • Develop and review ESA Section 10 permit applications, habitat conservation plans, and incidental take authorizations.
  • • Conduct species status assessments and population viability analyses to inform listing, delisting, and recovery decisions.
  • • Draft and implement recovery plans and monitoring protocols; track progress toward recovery criteria.
  • • Measure key environmental parameters and assess habitat quality, fragmentation, and connectivity.
  • • Assess effects of pollution, invasive species, disease, and climate change on listed species; recommend management actions.
  • • Manage and QA/QC species occurrence databases and geospatial layers.
  • • Prepare technical reports and environmental review documents (e.g., NEPA, ESA) and communicate results to regulators and the public.
  • • Review and comment on permits, EIS/EAs, and project plans for scientific adequacy and ESA compliance.
  • • Represent the organization at meetings, hearings, and conferences in a technical capacity.
  • • Develop standardized survey, handling, and sampling protocols that minimize take and ensure data quality.
  • • Train, supervise, and ensure safety of biological technicians, field crews, and volunteers.
  • • Prepare scopes of work, budgets, and schedules for surveys, monitoring, and recovery projects.
  • • Secure funding through grants and cooperative agreements; manage contracts and reporting requirements.
  • • Perform compliance monitoring and post-construction surveys to verify mitigation effectiveness and permit conditions.
  • • Conduct outreach and education to increase stakeholder awareness and support for conservation measures.
