Telephone Operators
Description
Provide local call routing and directory assistance for a designated exchange or facility. Assist customers with local listings, special billing, credits or refunds, and support emergency and assisted calls within the service area.
  • • Answer local directory requests using alphabetical and geographic listings for the service area.
  • • Verify alternate spellings, neighborhoods, or listing formats when details are incomplete.
  • • Provide dialing assistance for callers who cannot place calls and support local emergency situations.
  • • Monitor switchboard indicators and complete local connections by dialing or pressing keys.
  • • Operate local switchboards and systems to set up local, person-to-person, and emergency calls.
  • • Assist with local billing issues, including third-party charges, credits, and refunds.
  • • Monitor automated collect-call systems and intervene when callers need help.
  • • Perform clerical tasks such as typing, proofreading, and sorting mail for the local office.
  • • Initiate busy-line interrupt for emergencies on local lines.
  • • Provide relay services for deaf or hard-of-hearing users within the local area.
  • • Promote local calling features, services, and savings plans when appropriate.
  • • Operate building or campus paging, bell, or buzzer systems to announce incoming calls.
  • • Update local directory and listing records.
  • • Maintain logs of local calls handled and related charges.
