Description
Evaluate, design, fit, and modify therapeutic footwear, custom foot orthoses, and shoe modifications to address foot and lower-limb conditions, enhance mobility, and prevent injury, based on clinical assessment and medical prescriptions.
- • Examine, interview, and measure patients to determine pedorthic needs and factors affecting footwear and orthotic fit, including gait and skin integrity.
- • Fit, test, and adjust therapeutic footwear, foot orthoses, and shoe modifications for optimal fit, function, and comfort.
- • Instruct patients on wear schedules, skin checks, and the use and care of footwear and foot orthoses.
- • Design and specify custom foot orthoses, shoe modifications, and therapeutic footwear based on prescriptions and assessments.
- • Maintain accurate patient records, measurements, and device histories.
- • Capture foot impressions with foam, plaster, or digital scans and modify models to guide fabrication.
- • Select appropriate materials, components, and top covers to meet accommodative or functional goals.
- • Collaborate with podiatrists and other clinicians to develop pedorthic specifications and confirm medical necessity.
- • Repair, rebuild, and modify therapeutic footwear and foot orthoses as needs change.
- • Fabricate custom foot orthoses and shoe modifications, or supervise laboratory technicians.
- • Train and supervise pedorthic assistants, fitters, and lab staff.
- • Update knowledge through continuing education, conferences, and standards reviews.
- • Educate healthcare teams about pedorthic devices, indications, and offloading strategies.
- • Research and evaluate new pedorthic materials, technologies, and fabrication methods.
- • Present case outcomes or findings at professional meetings or in publications.
