Description
Designs, measures, fits, and adapts orthopedic braces, orthoses, and prosthetic devices, including artificial limbs and facial prostheses, for patients with disabling conditions.
- • Examine, interview, and measure patients to determine orthotic and prosthetic needs and factors affecting fit.
- • Fit, test, and evaluate devices, making adjustments for proper fit, function, and comfort.
- • Instruct patients and caregivers in device use, wear schedules, and care.
- • Design orthotic and prosthetic devices based on physician prescriptions and patient assessments.
- • Maintain complete and accurate patient records and documentation.
- • Create and modify casts, scans, or molds of areas to be fitted to guide fabrication.
- • Select appropriate materials, components, and technologies based on the device design.
- • Collaborate with physicians and rehabilitation teams to formulate specifications and treatment plans.
- • Repair, rebuild, and modify orthotic and prosthetic devices as needed.
- • Fabricate devices or supervise technicians during fabrication and finishing.
- • Train and supervise assistants, technicians, and support staff.
- • Stay current through continuing education, certifications, and professional conferences.
- • Educate healthcare workers about orthotic and prosthetic options and indications.
- • Conduct or support research on device design, materials, and clinical outcomes.
- • Publish or present findings at professional meetings and in journals.
