Description
Design, measure, fit, and adjust orthopedic braces and other orthotic devices to support, correct, or enhance musculoskeletal function for patients with disabling conditions.
- • Examine, interview, and measure patients to determine orthotic needs and factors affecting fit.
- • Fit, test, and evaluate orthoses on patients, adjusting for fit, function, and comfort.
- • Instruct patients and caregivers in the use and care of orthotic devices.
- • Design orthotic devices based on physician prescriptions and patient assessment.
- • Maintain detailed patient records and device histories.
- • Make and modify molds, scans, or casts of areas to be fitted with orthoses to guide fabrication.
- • Select materials, components, and alignment based on orthotic design and patient goals.
- • Collaborate with physicians and therapists to formulate orthotic specifications and treatment plans.
- • Repair, rebuild, and modify orthotic appliances as needed.
- • Fabricate orthoses or supervise technicians during fabrication.
- • Train and supervise orthotic assistants and technicians.
- • Update knowledge and skills through continuing education, conferences, and certification.
- • Educate healthcare staff about orthotic options, indications, and outcomes.
- • Research and evaluate new materials, technologies, and methods for orthotic design and use.
- • Publish or present clinical outcomes and research at professional meetings.
