Description
Collect and analyze radiation and contamination data in workplaces for review by radiation safety specialists. Implement and evaluate controls, maintain instruments and records, and help ensure ALARA compliance with NRC/state rules to limit worker exposure.
- • Maintain radiation safety records, source inventories, and dosimetry reports.
- • Issue, collect, and track personal dosimeters.
- • Calibrate, operate, and maintain radiation detection instruments.
- • Perform routine area radiation and contamination surveys.
- • Collect and analyze smear or wipe samples for surface contamination.
- • Conduct air sampling and monitor airborne radioactivity.
- • Verify availability and proper use of PPE, shielding, and contamination controls.
- • Prepare or review specifications and orders for survey meters, dosimeters, and shielding.
- • Verify licenses, registrations, and permits for compliance with radiation regulations.
- • Post and maintain radiation warning signs, labels, and access controls.
- • Receive, inventory, and perform leak tests of sealed sources.
- • Prepare radioactive materials for shipment and complete transport documentation.
- • Segregate, package, and process radioactive waste for decay-in-storage or disposal.
- • Review dosimetry and survey data; trend exposures and support ALARA goals.
- • Investigate alarms, abnormal readings, or suspected exposures and document findings.
- • Conduct worker interviews and incident reports after radiological events.
- • Train workers in radiation safety, contamination control, and instrument use.
- • Plan and participate in radiological emergency drills and exercises.
- • Maintain daily logs of surveys, instrument checks, and area rounds.
- • Provide on-scene radiation monitoring during radiography, nuclear medicine, or maintenance work.
- • Evaluate and document stop-work decisions related to radiation hazards.
- • Recommend corrective actions and controls to reduce dose or contamination.
- • Inspect shielding, interlocks, and access controls on radiation-producing devices.
- • Coordinate with regulators and site management during inspections or audits.
- • Prepare documentation for regulatory inspections, incidents, or enforcement actions.
- • Assist with decontamination and area release following spills or releases.
