Description
Perform complex hematology and coagulation testing on blood and bone marrow to support diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of hematologic and bleeding disorders; ensure quality results, maintain instruments, and may train or supervise staff.
- • Perform complete blood counts, differentials, reticulocyte counts, and ESR using analyzers and microscopy.
- • Review and verify results for accuracy, delta checks, instrument flags, and clinical plausibility.
- • Prepare, stain, and evaluate peripheral blood and bone marrow smears; assess cell morphology and document critical findings.
- • Conduct coagulation testing such as PT/INR, aPTT, fibrinogen, D-dimer, and mixing studies; interpret QC results.
- • Operate, calibrate, and maintain hematology analyzers, coagulation instruments, slide stainers, and microscopes.
- • Enter, validate, and release results in the LIS; ensure complete and accurate documentation.
- • Perform hemoglobinopathy testing such as hemoglobin electrophoresis or HPLC and sickle cell screening.
- • Perform and assist with flow cytometric immunophenotyping for hematologic disorders, where applicable.
- • Implement and monitor quality control, proficiency testing, and quality assurance activities.
- • Develop, validate, and update hematology and coagulation procedures and reference ranges.
- • Troubleshoot instrument issues, reagent problems, sample integrity, and discrepant results; initiate corrective actions.
- • Communicate critical values and provide technical consultation to clinicians and nursing staff.
- • Ensure proper specimen collection, anticoagulant choice, labeling, and handling for hematology studies.
- • Maintain and clean laboratory equipment; manage inventory; prepare reagents and controls.
- • Train, mentor, or supervise laboratory personnel, students, or assistants in hematology procedures.
