Description
Catalog, label, store, and retrieve backup/media tapes using established classification and retention schedules. Maintain secure inventory, track circulation, operate tape libraries, and fulfill mount and restore requests.
- • Create and update tape records in inventory systems when new media arrives or is repurposed.
- • Track tape check-outs and returns to ensure timely reconciliation with vaults, operators, and offsite storage.
- • Collect incoming tapes from backup operations, receiving docks, or departments for intake.
- • Classify tapes by system, job, retention class, or barcode range per library standards.
- • Scan barcodes and review labels/manifests to determine slotting, rotation, and vault destinations.
- • Shelve tapes in racks, vaults, or robotic libraries according to location maps and slot IDs.
- • Label and barcode new tapes; record IDs in asset management and backup catalogs.
- • Respond to inquiries about tape status, location, retention, or chain of custody.
- • Improve cataloging schemas, location plans, and retention workflows; assist with migrations.
- • Inspect tapes, cases, and labels for condition and readability; correct placement issues.
- • Process expired media by degaussing/shredding or transferring to long-term storage per policy.
- • Operate and monitor robotic tape libraries and loaders; mount and dismount tapes as scheduled.
- • Prepare and maintain pull sheets, checklists, and chain-of-custody documentation.
- • Mount tapes for restore, duplication, audit, or verification jobs and confirm job completion.
- • Enter and update tape metadata, locations, and retention codes in management systems.
- • Perform general office and data center tasks, including ticket updates, mail/shipments, and securing media.
- • Maintain movement logs and audit trails; reconcile inventories and generate reports.
- • Pull and deliver requested tapes to authorized staff or carriers; verify permissions and IDs.
- • Coordinate pickups and returns with offsite storage vendors and monitor compliance with security and retention policies.
