Description
Advise international students on immigration, academic, and cultural matters; manage SEVIS compliance; and coordinate orientation and support services to promote student success and well-being.
- • Maintain accurate SEVIS and institutional records for international students in compliance with federal and university policies.
- • Issue and update I-20/DS-2019 documents, including program extensions, changes of major, and address updates.
- • Provide individual and group advising on F-1/J-1 regulations, enrollment requirements, and maintaining status.
- • Review term enrollment and authorize reduced course loads or leaves when eligible.
- • Advise on employment options and authorization, including on-campus work, CPT, OPT, and STEM OPT.
- • Process OPT/CPT recommendations, STEM OPT reporting, and employment validations in SEVIS.
- • Provide travel signatures and guidance on travel, visa renewals, and reentry.
- • Plan and deliver pre-arrival communications and international student orientations.
- • Develop and present workshops on immigration rules, academic success, cultural adjustment, safety, and tax basics.
- • Conduct follow-ups and case management to monitor student progress and compliance.
- • Prepare compliance, statistical, and activity reports for SEVP and institutional leadership.
- • Assess student needs and refer to campus or community resources for housing, health, legal, financial, or academic support.
- • Coordinate health insurance enrollment requirements and educate students on coverage and care access.
- • Liaise with faculty, academic advisors, registrar, payroll, and HR to support student success and compliance.
- • Train faculty and staff on international student regulations, processes, and best practices.
- • Collaborate on policies, procedures, and systems that improve international student services.
- • Develop and oversee peer mentor or ambassador programs for international students.
- • Support international student organizations and cultural programs and events.
- • Partner with career services and employers to promote opportunities compliant with work authorization.
- • Verify enrollment and produce official letters for embassies, travel, Social Security, and other needs.
- • Manage transfers in and out, changes of education level, reinstatements, and reactivations.
- • Advise sponsored students and coordinate with government sponsors and third-party agencies.
- • Provide guidance to students and dependents on SSN/ITIN, driver's licenses, banking, and local living.
- • Identify and respond to student crises or safety concerns and connect students with appropriate support.
- • Address reports of discrimination, harassment, or bias and facilitate referrals and reporting.
- • Participate in recruitment and admissions outreach and advise admitted students on the visa process.
- • Communicate and enforce institutional and federal policies related to immigration compliance and conduct.
- • Attend trainings, conferences, and webinars (e.g., NAFSA, SEVP) and serve on campus committees.
- • Maintain confidential advising notes and records in accordance with FERPA and federal guidelines.
- • Monitor students at risk of status violations and send proactive reminders or holds to prompt action.
- • Maintain office communications, including website content, newsletters, and FAQs.
- • Supervise and train student employees, interns, or graduate assistants.
- • Coordinate emergency response and resources for students affected by geopolitical events or disasters.
- • Compile regulatory updates and share timely advisories with students and campus partners.
