Description
Teach undergraduate and select graduate chemistry courses with a primary focus on instruction and laboratory supervision. Develop and deliver lectures and labs, assess learning, maintain a safe learning environment, advise students, and contribute to curriculum, assessment, and service. May engage in pedagogical scholarship and course or lab improvement rather than traditional research.
- • Prepare and deliver undergraduate and select graduate lectures in areas such as organic, analytical, and physical chemistry.
- • Supervise and demonstrate laboratory techniques; monitor lab sessions.
- • Evaluate and grade coursework, laboratory performance, assignments, and papers.
- • Compile, administer, and grade examinations, or oversee teaching assistants doing so.
- • Maintain attendance, grades, and other required student records.
- • Develop course materials, including syllabi, assignments, lab manuals, and handouts.
- • Hold regular office hours to advise and assist students.
- • Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, and instructional methods.
- • Supervise teaching assistants and coordinate laboratory sections; mentor undergraduate research or capstone projects.
- • Stay current in chemistry and chemical education through literature, collaboration, and conferences.
- • Initiate and facilitate classroom discussions and active-learning activities.
- • Engage in scholarship of teaching and learning or curricular innovation as appropriate to appointment.
- • Advise students on academic pathways, research opportunities, and careers.
- • Collaborate with colleagues on course scheduling, curriculum alignment, and assessment.
- • Serve on departmental and institutional committees.
- • Contribute to teaching or laboratory improvement grant proposals and internal funding requests.
- • Participate in student recruitment, orientation, and placement activities.
- • Prepare and submit instructional reports and assessment data.
- • Coordinate courses, labs, or program assessment; assist with accreditation documentation.
- • Advise and support student organizations and outreach activities.
- • Compile bibliographies and recommend readings for outside study.
- • Participate in campus and community outreach events.
- • Establish and enforce safety protocols for handling chemicals, equipment, and hazardous waste.
- • Select, order, and maintain textbooks, chemicals, lab supplies, and instructional equipment.
- • Engage with professional societies and teaching networks.
- • Write letters of recommendation for students.
- • Ensure laboratory spaces are clean, organized, and compliant with safety and waste-disposal rules.
