Description
Teach adults foundational reading, writing, and basic numeracy; assess skills; deliver individualized and group instruction; monitor progress; and build functional, workplace, and digital literacy to support advancement and, when appropriate, high school equivalency readiness.
  • • Adapt teaching methods and materials to learners’ literacy levels, goals, and learning styles.
  • • Observe and evaluate student work to measure progress and guide improvement.
  • • Plan balanced lessons combining direct instruction, guided practice, and real-life literacy tasks.
  • • Instruct individuals and groups in phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing strategies.
  • • Maintain accurate attendance, assessment, and progress records per program policies.
  • • Prepare classrooms and materials, including leveled texts and multisensory tools.
  • • Set and communicate clear literacy objectives for lessons and units.
  • • Lead classes, workshops, and demonstrations in functional reading, writing, numeracy, and life/work literacy.
  • • Encourage persistence and independent learning to prepare students for further education or training.
  • • Establish and enforce classroom norms to maintain a respectful and focused learning environment.
  • • Provide guidance and resources for the literacy components of high school equivalency preparation.
  • • Assign and assess classwork, homework, and reading logs.
  • • Use diagnostics and observations to identify strengths, needs, interests, and barriers.
  • • Register, orient, and assess new students for placement and goal setting.

  • • Create, administer, and score reading, writing, and performance-based assessments.
  • • Integrate computers, mobile devices, and assistive technology to support literacy and digital skills.
  • • Develop course outlines and scope-and-sequence aligned to program standards.
  • • Provide academic coaching and referrals for learners with personal or learning challenges.
  • • Uphold institutional policies and procedures for students.
  • • Review curriculum, teaching methods, and assessment data to improve courses.
  • • Collaborate with colleagues to plan lessons and align instruction across levels.
  • • Meet with counselors and community partners to discuss learner needs and progress.
  • • Participate in professional development to maintain and improve instructional competence.
  • • Prepare lesson plans and provide documentation as requested by supervisors.
  • • Compile reports on enrollment, attendance, progress, and outcomes.
  • • Select, order, and distribute leveled readers, workbooks, and supplies.
  • • Co-develop instructional resources with other instructors and staff.
  • • Support outreach, orientation events, and learner recruitment.
  • • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
  • • Organize literacy projects, guest speakers, and field experiences such as library visits.
  • • Provide basic career exploration and job-readiness literacy support.
  • • Schedule classes and tutoring sessions to maximize access and attendance.
  • • Ensure accessibility and provide accommodations for learners with disabilities.
  • • Train, supervise, and support volunteer tutors and peer mentors.
  • • Partner with libraries, employers, and agencies to expand literacy opportunities.
  • • Conduct peer observations and share effective literacy practices with instructors.
