Transportation Engineers
Description
Support transportation engineers on surface transportation projects under supervision. Assist with preparing designs, specifications, and estimates; collecting and analyzing traffic data; and planning modifications to improve safety and traffic flow. Perform drafting, modeling, field documentation, and project support in accordance with engineering standards and state or federal policies.
  • • Assist in preparing plans, specifications, and estimates for transportation projects.
  • • Draft plan sheets, details, and cross-sections in CAD to agency standards.
  • • Collect and summarize traffic data, including counts, speeds, and turning movements.
  • • Model traffic operations and scenarios using approved analysis tools.
  • • Prepare maps, exhibits, and figures for reports and public meetings.
  • • Create spreadsheets or simple scripts to automate data processing and QA.
  • • Support review of development plans for potential traffic impacts.
  • • Perform quantity takeoffs and preliminary cost estimates.
  • • Help evaluate signs, signals, pavement markings, and lighting for needed modifications.
  • • Participate in field inspections and site visits; document conditions with notes and photos.
  • • Assist with construction observation checklists to verify compliance with plans and standards.
  • • Compile material submittals, test results, and certifications for engineer review.
  • • Draft administrative, technical, and statistical sections of reports.
  • • Update project schedules and budget trackers under supervision.
  • • Coordinate meeting logistics and draft agendas and minutes.
  • • Support surveying activities, staking requests, and as-built markups.
  • • Check drawings and basic calculations for completeness and accuracy under guidance.
  • • Help prepare permit applications and environmental documentation summaries.
  • • Assist with drainage, erosion, and sediment control calculations and details.
  • • Research and summarize sustainable design options and products.
  • • Contribute to demolition or deconstruction plan development by compiling quantities and constraints.
  • • Support environmental compliance documentation and closeout for completed projects.
  • • Maintain project files, QA/QC logs, and version control.
  • • Assist with bid document preparation, addenda, and bid tabulations.
  • • Coordinate with contractors, utilities, and agencies by drafting correspondence.
  • • Support asset inventories and minor maintenance planning tasks for transportation systems.
