Transportation Engineers
Description
Advise public and private clients on planning and delivering surface transportation projects in accordance with engineering standards and state and federal policy. Develop conceptual through preliminary designs, specifications, and cost estimates; model and analyze traffic; and recommend modifications to streets, highways, and multimodal corridors to improve safety, mobility, and compliance.
  • • Plan corridor modifications to improve safety, capacity, and multimodal access.
  • • Prepare planning-level and engineer’s cost estimates.
  • • Present analyses, maps, and project proposals at public meetings and stakeholder workshops.
  • • Conduct traffic impact studies for proposed developments and site plans.
  • • Prepare technical reports on traffic operations, safety, and multimodal performance.
  • • Assess transportation systems, signals, and lighting to recommend upgrades or expansions.
  • • Build and run travel demand, microsimulation, or signal models to evaluate scenarios.
  • • Develop cost estimates, phasing plans, and outline specifications for proposed improvements.
  • • Produce conceptual and preliminary design layouts with supporting calculations.
  • • Support procurement, bid evaluations, and contract administration as an owner’s representative.
  • • Diagnose traffic issues and recommend operational or geometric improvements.
  • • Review material submittals and test results for compliance with specifications.
  • • Conduct field audits and post-construction reviews for compliance and performance.
  • • Coordinate and scope surveying, counts, and other data collection activities.
  • • Facilitate coordination among agencies, utilities, developers, and contractors.
  • • Provide QA/QC reviews of plans, calculations, models, and estimates.
  • • Prepare or review environmental studies and compliance documentation (e.g., NEPA).
  • • Develop asset management plans and maintenance and operations strategies.
  • • Prepare concept and preliminary plans for highways, streets, transit, and related facilities.
  • • Provide stormwater and erosion control design guidance for transportation projects.
  • • Integrate sustainability and resilience, including green infrastructure, into project alternatives.
  • • Plan deconstruction, road diets, or facility repurposing with environmental stewardship.
  • • Review construction practices and materials for environmental compliance.
  • • Monitor and report environmental compliance during and after construction.
  • • Develop grant applications, funding strategies, and benefit-cost analyses.
  • • Prepare project schedules and risk registers to support delivery and decision-making.
