Recreation Workers
Description
Plan and deliver therapeutic recreation services for individuals with illnesses, disabilities, or injuries in healthcare and community settings. Assess needs, develop and implement treatment plans using recreation-based interventions to improve physical, cognitive, social, and emotional functioning, while documenting outcomes and promoting safety and inclusion.
  • • Conduct individualized assessments of abilities, interests, and leisure barriers.
  • • Develop person-centered treatment goals and plans with the care team.
  • • Plan and facilitate individual and group therapeutic recreation sessions.
  • • Explain techniques, adaptive equipment, and safety procedures.
  • • Monitor response and progress; adjust interventions as needed.
  • • Document assessments, session notes, and outcomes in the EHR.
  • • Apply evidence-based modalities (e.g., relaxation, cognitive stimulation, social skills).
  • • Educate clients and families on leisure skills, coping, and community reintegration.
  • • Enforce safety, risk-management, and infection-control protocols; provide first aid/CPR.
  • • Coordinate schedules, space, and resources; maintain supply and equipment inventories.
  • • Collaborate with nurses, therapists, physicians, and case managers to align care.
  • • Plan and lead community outings and reintegration activities; ensure accessibility.
  • • Evaluate program effectiveness and report outcome metrics; recommend improvements.
  • • Train, supervise, and mentor assistants, interns, and volunteers; assign duties.
  • • Address participant concerns and behaviors; de-escalate and resolve complaints.
  • • Facilitate leadership, peer support, and self-advocacy opportunities.
  • • Organize special therapeutic events or camps aligned with treatment goals.
  • • Deliver bedside or in-room interventions for clients with limited mobility.
  • • Ensure cultural competence and inclusion; adapt activities for diverse needs.
  • • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and discharge planning; provide referrals.
  • • Maintain and ensure safe use of therapy spaces and adaptive equipment.
  • • Orient new clients to programs, rules, and expectations; encourage engagement.
  • • Schedule maintenance of facilities and equipment.
