Description
Operate and monitor USPS mail sorting and canceling machines to process incoming and outgoing mail in USPS facilities or contractor sites. Set up routing schemes, feed and route items, resolve jams, make minor adjustments, and keep production and quality records while ensuring items meet addressing and postage standards and coordinating container movement.
  • • Set up sorting equipment and select routing schemes using the machine interface.
  • • Feed mail to conveyors and hoppers, monitoring flow and throughput.
  • • Bundle, label, and route sorted mail to designated dispatch areas by deadline.
  • • Operate OCR, barcode, and canceling modules; verify scan quality and reads.
  • • Clear jams and remove misfeeds; restart lanes safely.
  • • Perform minor adjustments and preventive maintenance per checklists.
  • • Check items for legible addresses, correct postage, and processable condition.
  • • Use directories or address resolution tools to redirect undeliverable mail.
  • • Open, label, and seal mail containers and trays.
  • • Hand-sort exception or odd-sized items and segregate special handling pieces.
  • • Move containers using tugs, pallet jacks, or forklifts as authorized.
  • • Load and unload containers to and from trucks, docks, and conveyors.
  • • Record production counts, exceptions, downtime, and maintenance in logs.
  • • Train new operators on equipment operation, safety, and quality procedures.
