Postal Service Mail Sorters, Processors, and Processing Machine OperatorsDescription
Coordinate and document the movement of mail and postal equipment between facilities. Receive and dispatch highway and air trips, verify container tags and seals, prepare dispatch documents, and route mail to scheduled transportation. Operate dock and yard equipment, load and unload vehicles, and maintain records of shipments, pouches, and sacks in compliance with USPS transportation and safety procedures.
- • Direct mail containers to scheduled trips using computer-based routing and scanning systems.
- • Placard, label, and stage containers by destination and clearance times.
- • Train new clerks on dispatch, dock safety, and scanning procedures.
- • Break down inbound trips and route containers to designated operations or onward dispatch.
- • Operate handheld scanners, dock management software, and bar-code systems.
- • Consult dispatch lists and routing directories to resolve transportation questions.
- • Clear dock and conveyor jams and remove obstructing equipment safely.
- • Verify destination tags, seal numbers, trip assignments, and required documentation before dispatch.
- • Open, retag, or relabel containers when re-dispatch is required.
- • Secure damaged containers or loose mail and prepare it for safe transport.
- • Move mail containers using forklifts, tugs, pallet jacks, or automated trains.
- • Segregate missent, delayed, restricted, or special-handling items and route appropriately.
- • Load and unload postal and contract carrier trucks; verify counts and condition.
- • Seal and placard trailers and record seal numbers, dispatch times, and exceptions.
