Description
Fabricate, finish, and quality-control contact lenses from prescriptions. Cut, polish, hydrate, surface-treat, inspect, and package soft and RGP lenses to meet specified parameters.
  • • Polish front and back surfaces to required optical quality.
  • • Review prescriptions, work orders, and corneal measurements to determine contact lens specifications.
  • • Select RGP blanks, soft lens molds, monomers, tools, and polishing wheels according to specifications.
  • • Mount lens buttons or blanks in chucks of lathes, grinders, polishers, or coating machines.
  • • Set up and program machines to cut base curves, peripheral curves, diameters, and center thickness.
  • • Position and adjust cutting tools to specified curvature, dimensions, and depth of cut.
  • • Shape and smooth lens edges for comfort and proper fit.
  • • Hydrate cast or lathe-cut lenses to final water content and dimensions.
  • • Apply plasma or other surface treatments to enhance wettability, as required.
  • • Inspect lenses under magnification to detect flaws, edge chips, or surface irregularities.
  • • Measure base curve, power, diameter, thickness, and axis using precision instruments.
  • • Mark axes and orientation for toric and multifocal lenses.
  • • Clean and disinfect lenses using approved solutions and aseptic techniques.
  • • Tint soft lenses or apply cosmetic filters according to work orders.
  • • Remove lenses from molds and segregate by batch for further processing or storage.
  • • Package, label, and lot-track finished lenses and prepare documentation or certificates.
  • • Maintain and calibrate equipment; replace tools and consumables.
  • • Follow safety, quality, and regulatory procedures and complete production records.
