EHS Specialist (Environmental Health and Safety Specialist)

Description
Review, evaluate, and improve workplace and environmental conditions; develop and implement EHS programs, procedures, and permits to prevent injuries, illnesses, and environmental releases. Conduct inspections, monitoring, and training; lead incident investigations; and ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and related regulations for public or private operations.
  • • Exercise stop-work authority for imminent danger to people or the environment.
  • • Recommend engineering, administrative, and PPE controls for hazardous tasks, materials, and emissions.
  • • Investigate injuries, illnesses, spills, releases, and near misses; lead root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • • Evaluate ventilation, exposure controls, noise, lighting, and ergonomics affecting health and performance.
  • • Develop and maintain industrial hygiene and environmental monitoring programs (air, noise, wastewater, stormwater).
  • • Inspect facilities, equipment, and work practices for compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and local regulations.
  • • Partner with engineers, maintenance, and occupational health to implement controls and process changes.
  • • Deliver EHS training and demonstrate proper use of PPE and safety equipment.
  • • Provide new-hire EHS orientations and create training materials and job-specific procedures.
  • • Collect samples of air, dust, vapors, water, soil, and waste for analysis.
  • • Address EHS complaints and conduct inspections to verify compliance with permits and public health regulations.
  • • Administer Hazard Communication/Right-to-Know programs and manage SDS libraries.
  • • Maintain and drill emergency response, spill prevention (SPCC), and evacuation plans.
  • • Coordinate medical surveillance, respirator fit testing, and exposure assessments as required.
  • • Verify availability and maintenance of fire protection, safety, and first-aid equipment.
  • • Conduct EHS audits of facilities, construction areas, and hazardous waste operations.
  • • Oversee identification, accumulation, labeling, and sampling of hazardous and universal wastes.
  • • Maintain chemical and hazardous waste inventories and tracking systems to ensure proper handling and disposal.
  • • Prepare wastes for shipment and disposal in compliance with RCRA and DOT, including packaging and labeling.
  • • Perform or coordinate laboratory analyses and inspections to assess contamination, purity, or cleanliness.
  • • Analyze EHS metrics and incident data to identify trends and drive improvements.
  • • Prepare regulatory reports and internal documentation (e.g., OSHA logs, Tier II, TRI, air/water discharge reports).
