Description
Assist accelerator physicists and engineers with the operation, maintenance, and quality control of particle accelerators and beamline systems in research, medical, or industrial facilities. Operate and troubleshoot RF, magnet, vacuum, cooling, and control systems; set up diagnostics; and monitor radiation and safety interlocks.
- • Calibrate beam diagnostics, sensors, and interlock devices.
- • Follow accelerator operating procedures and environmental, health, and safety requirements.
- • Conduct surveillance testing and pre-run checkouts of accelerator subsystems.
- • Monitor accelerator and beamline performance to identify inefficiencies, hazards, or maintenance needs.
- • Test RF, magnet, vacuum, and cooling equipment to verify proper operation.
- • Apply lockout/tagout and safety tags to equipment requiring service.
- • Follow radiation worker policies, ALARA practices, and dosimetry protocols.
- • Maintain, repair, or upgrade accelerator components and diagnostics.
- • Monitor instruments, gauges, and control system readouts during operations.
- • Notify and direct personnel to vacate areas during radiation or beam hazards.
- • Calculate operating parameters such as beam time, dose, energies, currents, and vacuum pressures using standard formulas.
- • Measure and document area radiation levels with survey meters and detectors.
- • Coordinate with maintenance teams to ensure readiness of vacuum, water cooling, RF power, and cryogenic support systems.
- • Identify and implement decontamination or activation control procedures as needed.
- • Decontaminate tools and surfaces using approved cleaning or abrasive methods.
- • Collect air, water, smear, or material samples to assess activation or contamination.
- • Recommend decontamination and waste handling procedures based on equipment type and contamination level.
- • Install, test, and maintain area radiation monitors and beam loss detection systems.
