Research MRI Technologist (Research Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists
Description
Operate MRI scanners to execute human research protocols. Ensure participant safety and comfort, acquire high-quality data, and monitor for artifacts. Implement protocol-specific sequences and stimulus paradigms; may administer gadolinium contrast per scope of practice. Screen and confirm consent per IRB requirements, position participants, and synchronize physiological monitoring. Enter and manage study metadata; de-identify, store, and transfer data securely; maintain QA and regulatory compliance.
  • • Conduct screening interviews to identify MRI contraindications for research participants.
  • • Confirm informed consent and IRB compliance before scanning.
  • • Explain study procedures, risks, and expectations to participants and caregivers.
  • • Position participants and apply immobilization to meet protocol requirements.
  • • Operate MRI scanners to run protocol-specified sequences (e.g., fMRI, DTI, MRS).
  • • Select coils and adjust parameters to achieve study endpoints.
  • • Calibrate scanners and perform daily QA and phantom scans.
  • • Attach and monitor physiological sensors such as ECG, pulse oximeter, and respiratory belts.
  • • Connect physiological leads to acquisition systems and synchronize with scanner triggers.
  • • Set up and synchronize stimulus presentation, response devices, and eye-tracking as required.
  • • Administer gadolinium contrast per research protocol and scope of practice.
  • • Monitor participant safety, comfort, and motion; provide ear protection and communication.
  • • Inspect images and time series for artifacts and protocol compliance; repeat as needed.
  • • Record study metadata, timing logs, and protocol deviations in electronic systems.
  • • De-identify, reconstruct, and export imaging and physiological data.
  • • Transfer data securely to servers or repositories and create verified backups.
  • • Troubleshoot scanner, coil, stimulus, and monitoring equipment issues.
  • • Coordinate scheduling with investigators and participants.
  • • Review protocol specifications and investigator orders to confirm prescribed exams.
  • • Communicate incidental findings to a supervising radiologist or study physician per policy.
  • • Maintain inventory of research supplies, coils, and accessories.
  • • Train students and research staff in MRI safety, screening, and workflow.
  • • Write brief reports or notes summarizing scan sessions and issues for investigators.
  • • Test and document equipment performance in accordance with specifications.
