Description
Operate MRI scanners to produce diagnostic images. Ensure patient safety and comfort by screening for contraindications, explaining procedures, positioning patients, and monitoring during exams; verify orders and image quality. Administer gadolinium contrast per protocol and document patient and exam data in the imaging system.
  • • Review physicians' orders to confirm prescribed exams and protocols.
  • • Conduct MRI safety screenings for contraindications (implants, metal, pregnancy, tattoos).
  • • Explain MRI procedures to patients and families.
  • • Obtain brief medical histories and verify allergies or renal status.
  • • Position and immobilize patients for optimal imaging.
  • • Provide hearing protection and comfort aids.
  • • Attach and connect physiologic monitoring leads as needed.
  • • Start IVs and administer gadolinium contrast per scope and protocol.
  • • Monitor patients during scans and respond to concerns or adverse reactions.
  • • Select appropriate coils, protocols, and imaging parameters.
  • • Operate MRI scanners to acquire diagnostic images.
  • • Inspect images for quality and completeness; repeat sequences as needed.
  • • Calibrate and test MRI consoles and peripheral equipment.
  • • Troubleshoot scanner, coil, or monitor issues.
  • • Perform daily system checks and quality assurance per specifications.
  • • Enter patient and exam data into the imaging system and PACS.
  • • Archive and back up images to PACS or approved storage.
  • • Produce image records or films as required.
  • • Maintain inventory of MRI and clinical supplies.
  • • Precept or instruct students and staff in MRI procedures and equipment operation.
  • • Schedule and coordinate MRI appointments as needed.
  • • Support anxious or claustrophobic patients; request sedation orders when indicated.
  • • Perform specialized studies (e.g., fMRI, cardiac cine, MR angiography) as trained.
  • • Operate dedicated extremity or portable MRI units when applicable.
