MRI Special Procedures Technologist (Magnetic Resonance Imaging Special Procedures Technologist)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging TechnologistsDescription
Perform complex MRI examinations and assist with MR-guided special procedures, ensuring Level 2 MR safety, patient monitoring, and sterile technique. Operate advanced coils, guidance software, and power injectors; optimize protocols and post-processing; collaborate with radiologists and anesthesia; document, archive, and verify high-quality diagnostic results.
- • Conduct comprehensive MR safety screening for patients, staff, and devices, confirming conditional status of implants and tools.
- • Explain special procedure steps and pre/post instructions; verify informed consent is documented per policy.
- • Review physicians' orders and indications; confirm protocols, required labs, and contraindications.
- • Schedule and coordinate MRI special procedures with radiologists, anesthesia, and nursing.
- • Prepare the room, equipment, and specialized coils; ensure availability of MR-safe interventional supplies.
- • Establish and maintain a sterile field for MRI-guided interventions as required.
- • Position patients for targeted access and imaging; apply immobilization and padding.
- • Attach MRI-safe physiologic monitoring and configure ECG and respiratory gating.
- • Provide hearing protection and two-way communication; coach breath-holds or task performance.
- • Operate MRI scanners, guidance software, and interventional workflows during procedures.
- • Select and optimize advanced protocols (e.g., MRA, perfusion, diffusion, cardiac, spectroscopy, fMRI).
- • Set up and operate MRI-compatible power injectors; program bolus timing and multiphase sequences.
- • Administer gadolinium contrast within scope; monitor and document patient response.
- • Coordinate pharmacologic stress or sedation with authorized providers; monitor patient tolerance.
- • Perform real-time imaging for device localization and target confirmation during MR-guided procedures.
- • Assess image quality and adjust parameters to meet diagnostic and procedural requirements.
- • Perform advanced post-processing and 3D reconstructions; generate perfusion or functional maps as directed.
- • Export, archive, and route images and derived datasets to PACS and specialty workstations; verify completeness.
- • Create concise procedural notes, including contrast details, supplies used, and any complications.
- • Calibrate and QA scanners, coils, monitors, and injectors; document daily performance checks.
- • Troubleshoot technical issues with scanners, coils, injectors, monitors, or software; escalate as needed.
- • Maintain inventory and track expiration of sterile kits, biopsy devices, and disposables.
- • Instruct and mentor staff or students in MRI special procedures and Level 2 MR safety.
- • Participate in emergency preparedness and respond to incidents in Zone IV per quench and fire protocols.
