Description
Diagnose and treat skin, hair, and nail disorders in infants, children, and adolescents; provide medical, surgical, and laser dermatology tailored to pediatrics; collaborate with pediatric specialists and educate families.
  • • Refer pediatric patients to subspecialists such as genetics, rheumatology, oncology, or plastic surgery as needed.
  • • Record pediatric histories, including growth, development, family atopy, medications, and allergies.
  • • Provide dermatologic consultation to pediatricians, neonatologists, and other child health professionals.
  • • Stay current with pediatric dermatology literature, conferences, and professional guidelines.
  • • Instruct students, residents, and fellows in pediatric dermatologic diagnosis and treatment.
  • • Evaluate candidacy and obtain guardian consent for pediatric procedures such as laser therapy or lesion excision.
  • • Order and interpret tests such as microbiologic cultures, KOH prep, patch testing, dermoscopy, imaging, or endocrine studies when indicated.
  • • Recommend age-appropriate diagnostics based on history and physical exam findings.
  • • Conduct or participate in clinical or translational research in pediatric dermatology.
  • • Provide therapies such as topical or intralesional steroids, emollient and wet-wrap regimens, cryotherapy, comedo extraction, or cantharidin for molluscum.
  • • Perform laser treatments or dermabrasion when appropriate for scars or vascular lesions in children.
  • • Prescribe age-appropriate topical and systemic therapies, including antibiotics, antihistamines, corticosteroids, calcineurin inhibitors, retinoids, and hormonal therapy for adolescents when indicated.
  • • Perform skin surgery and procedures, including biopsies, excisions, and nail surgery, to diagnose or treat pediatric skin disease.
  • • Perform biopsies to evaluate atypical nevi, vasculitis, infections, or suspected melanoma in children.
  • • Diagnose and manage birthmarks and pigmented or vascular lesions, including congenital nevi, café-au-lait macules, dysplastic nevi, hemangiomas, and port-wine stains.
  • • Counsel patients and families on sun protection, eczema care routines, medication safety, and monitoring for concerning skin changes.
  • • Conduct complete, age-appropriate skin examinations.
  • • Diagnose and treat common pediatric conditions such as atopic dermatitis, acne, warts, molluscum, tinea, alopecia areata, psoriasis, vitiligo, and skin infections.
