Description
Diagnose and treat cutaneous malignancies—primarily high-risk nonmelanoma skin cancers and selected melanomas—using Mohs micrographic surgery with intraoperative histology; perform immediate reconstruction and comprehensive perioperative care.
- • Evaluate patients and tumors to determine indications for Mohs surgery.
- • Perform Mohs micrographic excision with real-time margin control.
- • Map and orient excised tissue, process frozen sections, and interpret slides intraoperatively.
- • Use immunohistochemical stains when indicated for melanoma or other tumors.
- • Plan and perform immediate reconstruction with primary closures, flaps, or grafts.
- • Conduct shave or punch biopsies to establish diagnoses.
- • Document histories, operative maps, pathology findings, and outcomes.
- • Administer local anesthesia and maintain hemostasis and sterile technique.
- • Manage postoperative care and complications such as bleeding, infection, or dehiscence.
- • Counsel patients on procedure risks, scarring, sun protection, and follow-up.
- • Conduct complete skin examinations and surveillance for recurrence or new cancers.
- • Prescribe adjuvant or field therapies such as imiquimod, 5-FU, or photodynamic therapy when appropriate.
- • Recommend and coordinate imaging or staging and refer to oncology, radiation, or plastic surgery as needed.
- • Provide dermatologic oncology consultation to other health professionals.
- • Instruct residents or fellows in Mohs technique and cutaneous oncology.
- • Read current literature, collaborate with colleagues, and attend conferences to stay current.
- • Conduct or participate in clinical research and quality improvement initiatives.
- • Refer patients to other specialists, as needed.
